Dammit, Jim! I’m a Klepto, not a Doctor!

Something has been bothering me about Star Trek Beyond since the first time I saw it: Why was Bones nosing around in Chekov’s locker and stealing his booze?

I mean, I get the significance of the scene and its ties to Classic Trek™ but why was he taking things from the dude’s locker?

As far as I know, the scene was shot before the actor died and even if it wasn’t, Chekov is definitely alive at this point in the film.
If there was a scene that was cut that would have explained it, it should have been just as easy to remove the specific mention of where the booze came from for the rest of the scene during editing.

So what’s the deal?
Is Bones a kleptomaniac or does Starfleet have regular locker checks?
